Onchocerca Gutturosa in Tanzanian Cattle: Its prevalence and distribution in North-Eastern Tanzania

Abstract

The frequency of infestation with Onchocerca gutturosa and the distribution of onchocerciasis in cattle in Tanzania was studied. In some areas 33.3% of heads were affected. The study was conducted using the skin snip method, examination of ligamentum nuchae and of other internal organs of cattle. The role of Simulium vorax and Simulium nyasalandicum (Amani form) in transmitting the larvae of O. gutturosa and O. volvulus has been discussed. The different biting sites for each of these species have been described and the preventive measures against human as well as animal Onchocerciasis suggested
