Hyperglycaemia During Xylazine-Ketamine Anaesthesia in Goats

Plasma glucose concentrations were determined in healthy young goats before and after intramuscular administration of Xylazine, Ketamine, or Xylazine-Ketamine combination. Doses of 0.22mg of Xylazine and 11mg of Ketamine per kilogram body weight were used. Xylazine-ketamine produced deeper anaesthesia a duration longer than Xylazine or Ketamine when used alone. Plasma glucose levels increased significantly above the baseline values 15minutes after administration of either Xylazine or Xylazine-Ketamine combination. The level increased and peak value of plasma glucose concentration for Xylazine alone were lower than those in combination, while no significant changes were observed for Ketamine alone
