An Epizootic of Theileriosis in Cattle Characterised By a Nervous Syndrome, In Ngorongoro District, Tanzania
Keywords:
Cowdriosis, Cowdria ruminantium, cerebral theileriosisAbstract
Brain and heart samples submitted for examination from cattle dying of a nervous syndrome in Ngorongoro District, and suspected to be heart water, revealed numerous Theileria schizonts in crush smears of the brain cortex stained with Giemsa's stain. No evidence of Cowdria ruminantium was found in the smears. "Turning sickness" which is a form of cerebral theileriosis was thus confirmed, and it is speculated that, this was likely due to the breakdown in immunity in these partially immune animals due to severe reinfection challenge. T. mutans can also be implicated. Tick control is emphasized to prevent future outbreaks.
