Abstract

At the Morogoro town abattoir Tanzania, 418 healthy slaughtered cattle we examined for the presence of Salmonella in the gall-bladder, liver, caecal content, and mesenteric lymph nodes. Selenite Broth and Muller-Kaufmann tetrathionate broth media were used for enrichment and deaoxycholate citrate agar and brilliant green agar were used as the selective plating media. The results show that there was a Salmonella infection rate of 21.1%  S. typhymurium (11.4%) ,  S. amager (7.8%),  S. guildford (7.6 %), S. dublln (6. 7%) and S. sheffield (6.7%) were the five most prevalent serotypes isolated. The combined Salmonella recovery rates from two tissues more or two types of media  were significantly higher than the recovery from only one site or one type of media.
